             painting of a fire-breathing dragon

“One day, you will be old enough to start reading fairytales again.”
—  C.S. Lewis [1898-1963], in "The Chronicles of Narnia"

“Writing fantasy is like opening a door onto millions of people's dreams that they never knew they were having.”
—  Michael Timmins

“Heralds don't sing about men who lived in orthodoxy or played it safe, they sing about men who lived an uncertain future
and took enough risks to make your head spin.” —  Evan Meekins, in "The Black Banner"

First, you have to define fantasy. Many works of fiction come close – the genres of science fiction, with sub-genres of space opera and robots, are coded elsewhere on this online bookstore – so that leaves magic and talking animals and the many styles of 'sword and sorcery' fiction. There are works of time travel that belong in science fiction and others that are non-science fantasy. So much fiction has non-magical fantasy elements - is Perry Mason real? is James Bond real? how realistic is Zorro? or Buffalo Bill? - that we have to resist inclusion here.

The contents of this page are personal selections, often from pages and topics coded and updated on these bookstores since 2001.
More will be added; you can suggest your book or a favorite from childhood or whatever seems apt - all suggestions will be given serious consideration for inclusion here (or alternatively, inclusion on one the 1,000 other coded pages of these five online bookstores.

Selected  Quotations

“It is said that science fiction and fantasy are two different things. Science fiction is the improbable made possible,
and fantasy is the impossible made probable." — Rod Serling [1924-75]

“Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we know and understand, while imagination
embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand.” —  Michael Scott

“Fantasy is silver and scarlet, indigo and azure, obsidian veined with gold and lapis lazuli. Reality is plywood and plastic, done up in mud brown
and olive drab. Fantasy tastes of habaneros and honey, cinnamon and cloves, rare red meat and wines as sweet as summer.
Reality is beans and tofu, and ashes at the end.” —  George R.R. Martin

“All stories are ultimately about the fall.” —  J.R.R. Tolkien [1892-1973]

“Fantasy fiction is essentially about the concept of power; great fantasy fiction is about people who find it at great cost or lose it tragically;
mediocre fantasy fiction is about people who have it and never lose it but simply wield it.” —  Stephen King

“This is the real magic of fantasy fiction: it can feed souls and change lives.” —  David Gemmell

“You never know what you're gonna find when you look under those covers - grandma or the wolf.” —  Betsy Schow

“Fantasy is a reaction to the constraints of reality.” —  Stewart Stafford

“I propose to speak about fairy-stories, though I am aware that this is a rash adventure. Faërie is a perilous land, and in it are pitfalls
for the unwary and dungeons for the overbold.” —  J.R.R. Tolkien [1892-1973], in "Tolkien On Fairy-Stories"
