“In American writing, there are three perfect books, which seem to speak to every reader and condition:
Huckleberry Finn, The Great Gatsby, and The Catcher In The Rye
— Adam Gopnik, in The New Yorker, February 2010

Bootlegger Jay Gatsby buys a mansion in West Egg, Long Island (in New York) and hosts a string of lavish parties that fascinate his neighbor Nick Carroway (the narrator); Jay's one-time love Daisy is now married to wealthy neighbor Tom Buchanan, and she and Jay consider rekindling their affair; when Daisy drives a car over Tom's mistress, she asks Jay for help . . .

History of The Book
Fitzgerald's third novel was published by Scribner on 10 April 1925, to positive reviews but poor initial sales.

Historical  Details

The Long Island mansion of wealthy sculptor Charles Cary Rumsey and his wife railroad heiress Mary Harriman Rumsey is said to have inspired Scott Fitzgerald in many elements of "The Great Gatsby" novel. The lovely house stands on 5¼ acres in Sands Point, New York overlooking Long Island Sound; it has recently been restored and was put up for sale in August 2017 for $16.8M. However, news coverage states that the 13-bedroom mansion was designed and built in 1928 by famous architects McKim, Mead & White – Fitzgerald did indeed spend a good deal of time with Rumsey and her family, but it was several years after publication of "The Great Gatsby".

¨            ¨

"Trimalchio" and "Trimalchio In West Egg" were among Fitzgerald's working titles for the 'Gatsby' novel. Chapter seven of 'Gatsby' begins "It was when curiosity about
Gatsby was at its highest that the lights in his house failed to go on one Saturday night – and, as obscurely as it began, his career as Trimalchio was over."

'Trimalchio' draft manuscript by F. Scott Fitzgerald  "Trimalchio: An Early Version of The Great Gatsby" [2000]
by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Edited & with Introduction by James L.W. West III

"[Fitzgerald] produced 18,000 {?} words; most of this material was later discarded,
but he salvaged the short story "Absolution" (published in June 1924)."
