"Megalopolis: A Fable" [American Zoetrope/Lionsgate Sept 2024]
Francis Ford Coppola wrote the script for "Megalopolis" in the early 1980s, but the film was kept on the back-burner partially due to his financial debts. In the late 1990s when the movie was first announced, Coppola's nephew Nicolas Cage was attached to play Caesar; Russell Crowe was also considered - both actors did table reads with Coppola.

The film's plot was loosely inspired by an attempted coup d'état by the Roman politician Lucius Sergius Catilina in 63 BCE. Catilina had allied himself with senators frustrated with the political status quo of the Roman Republic, with aristocrats impoverished due to the proscriptions of the dictator Sulla, and with war veterans who had fallen into debt. Catilina reputedly promised his supporters debt relief and land reform. The coup briefly caused armed conflicts, but Catilina was killed in battle and his supporters were defeated. Five of Catilina's leading allies were executed without trial by Marcus Tullius Cicero, who was later exiled for executing Roman citizens without a trial.

Pre-production finally began in 2001 after filming 30 hours of second unit footage and holding a table read with Paul Newman, Uma Thurman, Robert De Niro, James Gandolfini, Nicolas Cage, Leonardo DiCaprio, Russell Crowe, Edie Falco, and Kevin Spacey; but the project was scrapped after the September 11 attacks, because a scene from the script (page 166) 'predicted' the attacks. In 2007, Coppola began developing the movie again with Leonardo DiCaprio attached to play Caesar but wasn't able to find production funding; the project was fully abandoned in 2007, and Coppola didn't begin developing it again until 2019.

In 2019, Coppola decided to make the movie with his own money and cast Jude Law, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, production was delayed. In 2022, Coppola was finally able to start pre-production; at this time the lead role was offered to Christian Bale but he had other obligations; in the end Adam Driver was cast as Caesar.
Lionsgate acquired distribution rights in June 2024, three months before the theatrical release.

The estimated production budget of $136 million makes "Megalopolis" one of the most expensive independent films ever made. "Megalopolis" grossed $7.6 million in the United States & Canada, and $6.7 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $14.3 million; Deadline Hollywood calculated that the film lost $75.5 million, when factoring together all expenses & revenues.
