Heart of Darkness  This work is the basis for Francis Ford Coppola's "Apocalypse Now" 1979 Movie
Appeared as a three-part series in Blackwood's Magazine (1899) before the 1902 publication. The narrator reports the tale told by Marlow of incidents during his stint as captain of a steamship in the Belgian Congo. Part of Marlow's assignment is to bring rogue ivory collector Kurtz back to civilization. This is not so easy, since Kurtz has used his guns and his charisma to command local tribes in taking ivory from other tribes. Kurtz is near death and he agrees to go with Marlow downriver; in a final lucid moment, Kurtz speaks his last words: "The horror! The horror!" and then dies. Some time later, Marlow meets the beautiful young woman in a photograph shown to him by Kurtz; she still mourns the man, and Marlow lies to her and says that Kurtz's last utterance was to speak her name.
