Kipling's "The Jungle Books"
Stories & Movies

Rudyard Kipling's "The Jungle Book" was published in 1894 and "The Second Jungle Book" was published in 1895, fully eighteen years before the appearance
of Tarzan. Kipling's stories and poems quickly became children's classics and later became a multi-media franchise starting with the last feature film
that was produced and developed by Walt Disney (Walt died before the film's release in 1967).

"In The Rukh" [1893 short story]
In the Rukh in Kindle format from   This tale, published in "Many Inventions" [D. Appleton & Co. 1893] was the first written of the Mowgli stories, though it deals with the closing chapters of his career – namely, his introduction to white men, his marriage and civilization, all of which took place, we may infer, some two or three years after he had finally broken away from his friends in the jungle (vide "The Spring Running" Second Jungle Book). Those who know the geography of India will see that it is a far cry from Seeonee to a Northern forest reserve; but though many curious things must have befallen Mowgli, we have no certain record of his adventures during those wanderings. There are, however, legends. — Rudyard Kipling's note as appended to "In The Rukh" when it was published in the June 1896 issue of McClure’s Magazine.}

The  Author

[Joseph] Rudyard Kipling [1865-1936]
Rudyard Kipling was born in British-ruled India in 1865, was educated in England, and returned to India in 1882. He worked at a newspaper in Lahore and wrote stories, and published several books of verse and prose. He set out for London in 1889, traveling across the United States & Canada and sending dispatches of his adventures for publication in The Pioneer back in Allahabad. He married in 1892 and honeymooned in the U.S., and then stayed, renting a cottage in Vermont where Rudyard began writing 'The Jungle Book'. He bought land nearby and constructed a house that was named Naulakha after a pavilion in India; he wrote & published more stories & books. By 1896 a famous author, Kipling took his family to England and settled first in Torquay, Devon, and then moved to East Sussex in 1897. He was at the height of his popularity when he received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1907. After his son John was killed in The War in France, Kipling became involved in political work, with veterans and military cemetaries and in fighting against Bolshevism in England and the rising Nazi Party in Germany. He wrote less and less and died of a ruptured duodenal ulcer in 1936.
