The aging Emperor Tiberius summons his adopted grandson, called Caligula, to Capri, and is murdered. The new Emperor begins as a popular ruler, but soon becomes a raging tyrant. The film revels in the supposed licentious behavior of the Roman aristocracy, with the extended version containing hardcore footage unrelated to the original scenario. Vidal sued to have his name removed from the credits.
