The delightfully macabre Addams Family cartoons by Charles Addams [1912-88] first appeared in The New Yorker Magazine in 1938 and have been adapted
as television series (1964, 1973, 1992, 1998, 2022), as five feature films (1991, 1993, 1998, 2019, 2021), as a Broadway musical stageplay (2010),
as a series of video games - and as the usual themed merchandise.

The Addams Family Credo: Sic gorgiamus allos subjectatos nunc (We gladly feast on those who would subdue us.)
— from "The Addams Family Movie" [1991]

History of The Cartoon Drawings
Cartoonist Charles Addams sold his first as-yet-unnamed Addams Family cartoon to The New Yorker Magazine in 1938, followed by roughly 1,200 more before his death in 1988. Anthology books were published from 1942, with both Addams Family and other cartoon content. The producer of the 1964 TV series asked Addams to name his still-unnamed main characters and to write a little bit about each one, to be used as a guide for the actors in the series. With the start of the TV series, The New Yorker Magazine stopped running any Addams Family-themed cartoons from Charles Addams until just prior to his death in 1988. The tenth anthology book was published in 1981.

History of The Adaptations
The first adaptation was the semi-successful television series broadcast on the A.B.C. Network; Filmways planned to shoot Season 3 in color, but A.B.C. canceled the show. "The Addams Family" 16-episode animated TV series ran in 1973; TV special "Halloween With The New Addams Family" ran in 1977; "The Addams Family" feature film of 1991 starred Raul Julia & Anjelica Huston; "The Addams Family" 21-episode TV series ran in 1992-93; the sequel "Addams Family Values" feature film of 1993 again starred Raul Julia & Anjelica Huston; the "Addams Family Reunion" TV special aired in 1998, starring Tim Curry & Daryl Hannah; "The New Addams Family" 65-episode animated TV series ran in 1998-99.

The more recent "The Addams Family" animated feature film appeared in 2019, with voices of Oscar Isaac & Charlize Theron; its sequel "The Addams Family 2" appeared in 2021. The live action hit cable TV series "Wednesday" [2022-23] has been streaming on Netflix; within three weeks of release, "Wednesday" became the second-most-watched English-language Netflix series; the second season has been ordered. The series is exec-produced by Tim Burton; "Wednesday" has made a star of Jenna Ortega.
