Emil and his detective friends following the thief (from 1931 movie)

"This is the story of a crime, just as it happened, from its beginning, in the quiet little town of Neustadt. Emil Tischbein -
young, eager, unsuspecting - holds a ticket on the morning bus to Berlin - (for) a holiday and a mission."
— Narrator of the 1964 movie

Synopsis

The film begins during the Weimar Republic in the small town of Neustadt, a provincial German town, where young schoolboy Emil Tischbein lives with his widowed mother; she is raising him alone and works as a hairdresser. She sends Emil to Berlin with 140 marks (a hairdresser's monthly salary then) to give to his grandmother who lives in the big city with his cousin, the girl Pony Hütchen. He also gets 20 marks for himself. On the way he is very careful not to lose the money and uses a needle to pin it to the lining of his jacket. On the train to Berlin, Emil meets a mysterious passenger who introduces himself as Herr Grundeis; the man gives Emil drugged chocolate and Emil falls asleep. When Emil wakes up, both the money and Herr Grundeis are gone; Emil spots Herr Grundeis and follows him. Emil meets a Berlin boy named Gustav, who tries to help Emil and introduces him to a group of local children who call themselves 'the detectives'.
After following Grundeis to a hotel and spying on him all night, Emil and the gang follow the thief to the bank; Herr Grundeis tries to exchange the money, but Emil proves that the money was his by describing the holes left by the needle that he used to pin the bills in the lining of his jacket - and Emil gets his money back. Herr Grundeis tries to run away, but Emil's new friends cling onto him until a police officer arrives. Once arrested, Herr Grundeis is found out to be a notorious bank robber; Emil receives a reward of 1,000 marks for capturing Herr Grundeis. In the last scene, an airplane takes Emil back to Neustaat where he is greeted as a local hero.

History of The Books & Stageplays & Movies

The original novel published in 1929 was very popular; the first English translation appeared in 1931, with further English translations following, and translations into almost 60 other languages to date. Erich Kästner published a stageplay in German and English in 1934, which is still often performed; two other stage adaptations were licensed and produced in 2013.

There are several film adaptions of "Emil and The Detectives": the British 1935 film and the German 1954 film are direct remakes of the 1931 film, using most of Billy Wilder's screenplay and (in the case of the 1935 film) even recreating many of the same camera shots. The book was adapted to film in Argentina in 1950, in Brasil in 1957, and in Bangladesh in 1980. Walt Disney made a color feature film of "Emil and The Detectives" in 1964, with all sorts of TV repeats and branded merchandise following.
