New York Times front page with headline 'Nixon resigns'

"The slow-rising central horror of 'WaterGate' is not that it might grind down to the reluctant impeachment of a vengeful thug
of a president whose entire political career has been a monument to the same kind of cheap shots and treachery he finally got nailed for,
but that we might somehow fail to learn something from it."
gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson [1937-2005]

"People have got to know whether or not their president is a crook. Well, I'm not a crook. I earned everything I've got."
Richard M. Nixon [1913-94]

"The fact of the WaterGate cover-up is not nearly as interesting as the step into making the cover-up. And when you understand the step,
you understand that Richard Nixon lied. That he was a criminal."  — Bob Woodward

"The political lesson of WaterGate is this: Never again must America allow an arrogant, elite guard of political adolescents to by-pass
the regular party organization and dictate the terms of a national election."  — Gerald R. Ford [1913-2006]

"From Watergate we learned what generations before us have known; our Constitution works. And during the WaterGate years it was interpreted
again so as to reaffirm that no one – absolutely no one – is above the law."  — Special Prosecutor Leon Jaworski [1905-82]

"Until we have a better relationship between private performance and the public truth, as was demonstrated with WaterGate, we as the public
are absolutely right to remain suspicious, contemptuous even, of the secrecy and the misinformation which is the digest of our news."
— novelist John le Carre

Watergate Exposed fiction by Robert Merritt & Doug Caddy  "Watergate Exposed: How the President of the United States and the Watergate Burglars Were Set Up" [2010] by 'confidential informant' Robert Merritt,
As Told To defense attorney Doug Caddy

This book is fiction! The bogus premise is that the homosexual author heard about the Watergate break-in before it happened, therefore ... set-up! What's true is that the 'plumbers' made several failed attempts and then when they did get into D.N.C.'s offices, they were caught red-handed.

Important  Dates

  • 1971 Sept 3: The burglary of psychiatrist Lewis Fielding's office was carried out by E. Howard Hunt, G. Gordon Liddy and CIA officers Eugenio Martínez, Felipe de Diego, and Bernard Barker, with approval of John Ehrlichman. The 'plumbers' found Daniel Ellsberg's file but it did not contain the potentially embarrassing information that they sought. The break-in was not known to Ellsberg or to the public until it came to light during Ellsberg and Russo's trial in April 1973.
  • 1972 June 17: Five burglars were arrested inside the WaterGate Hotel in Washington, DC.
  • 1972 June 23: President Nixon and White House Chief of Staff H.R. Haldeman discussed a plan to use the C.I.A. to obstruct the F.B.I.'s Watergate investigation (the conversation was secretly recorded).
  • 1972 Sept 15: A federal grand jury in Washington, DC indicted seven men in connection with the WaterGate burglary: the five burglars, plus White House staff E. Howard Hunt & G. Gordon Liddy.

  • 1973 Jan 3: The trial commenced in Los Angeles, California against Daniel Ellsberg & Anthony Russo on charges based on the Espionage Act of 1917
  • 1973 April 30: White House staffers John Ehrlichman, H.R. Haldeman, Richard Kleindienst, and John Dean were forced out of office based on the Ellsberg trial's revelations about the Fielding break-in.
  • 1973 May 11: All charges against Ellsberg & Russo were dropped after discovery that Justice Dept. lawyers had intentially mis-handled evidence, amounting to 'gross governmental misconduct'.
  • 1973 July 13: Former White House aide Alexander P. Butterfield revealed the existence of President Nixon's secret taping system, during testimony at the Senate Watergate hearings.
  • 1973 Oct 20: The infamous 'Saturday Night Massacre' – After a news conference by Special Prosecutor Archibald Cox, the White House ordered Attorney General Elliott Richardson to fire Cox; Richardson resigned rather than obey; his deputy William Ruckleshaus also resigned rather than obey; later that evening, the White House delivered a message to Cox at home that he had been fired by Solicitor General Robert H. Bork.
  • 1973 Oct 23: President Nixon agreed to turn over to Judge John Sirica the audio recordings subpoenaed by the WaterGate special prosecutor.
  • 1973 Nov 21: President Nixon's attorney J. Fred Buzhardt revealed the existence of the 18½-minute gap on one of the White House tape recordings subpoenaed for the Watergate hearings.
  • 1973 Nov 30: Former White House aide Egil 'Bud' Krogh pleaded guilty to violating the civil rights of Dr. Lewis Fielding by helping coordinate activities of the 'plumbers'.

  • 1974 March 1: A federal grand jury in Washington, DC indicted a second group of seven men on charges of conspiring to obstruct justice in connection with the WaterGate Conspiracy: former U.S. Attorney General John N. Mitchell, and White House staff H.R. Haldeman, John Ehrlichman, Charles Colson & Gordon C. Strachan (not tried), and lawyers to the re-election campaign Robert Mardian & Kenneth Parkinson.
  • 1974 March 7: John Ehrlichman and G. Gordon Liddy were indicted along with two White House officials in connection with the burglary in 1971 of the office of Daniel Ellsberg's psychiatrist.

  • 1974 June 15: Publication of "All The President's Men" book by Bob Woodward & Carl Bernstein.
  • 1974 July 24: U.S. Supreme Court decided unanimously in United States v. Nixon that the President's claim of 'executive privilege' was invalid against the Congressional subpoena for records connected to the Watergate burglary and that the White House must surrender the tapes & documents.
  • 1974 July 27: The U.S. House Judiciary Committee voted 27-11 to adopt the first of three articles of impeachment against President Nixon for personally engaging in conduct designed to obstruct justice in the Watergate case.
  • 1974 Aug 9: President Richard M. Nixon resigned rather than face impeachment proceedings in the House & Senate; Vice President Gerald Ford became President.
