"Sir Thomas Malory called his very long book 'The Death of Arthur'. It is the tragedy of sin coming home
to roost. [Arthur] did not know he was doing so, but it seems, in tragedy, that innocence is not enough."
E.B. White [1899-1985]

Whether the mythology of Arthur and Camelot and The Knights of the Round Table has any historic basis, the myth has had a strong impact
on British and American culture. Among modern authors & filmmakers & others fascinated with King Arthur were/are John Boorman, Luc Bresson,
Hal Foster {the "Prince Valiant" comic strip, 1937-80}, Walt Disney [1901-66], John Steinbeck [1902-68], Mary Stewart (5 books),
J.R.R. Tolkien [1892-1973], and Mark Twain [1835-1910].

The Legend of King Arthur & Camelot
     t e x t
     h e r e

the Round Table was first described in 1155 by Wace, who got his information from past legends. The castle (Camelot) is mentioned for the first time in Chrétien de Troyes' poem Lancelot, the Knight of the Cart, dating to the 1170s, though it does not appear in all the manuscripts. In fact, Geoffrey of Monmouth's list of kings of the Britons, published around the 12th century, is one of the first times we find the name of King Arthur. Many historians suggest that Arthur has no historical basis, that the stories are pure myth. Others think that there might not have been a King Arthur, but that the character has basis in fact.

one of the ancient names for King Arthur was 'the Raven King'

legend has it that the Tudors were decendents of Constantine (a Briton), as was King Arthur (grandson) who married three queens named Guinevere

The Fall of Arthur book by J.R.R. Tolkien  "The Fall of Arthur" [2013] by J.R.R. Tolkien, Edited by Christopher Tolkien
J.R.R. Tolkien [1892–1973] halted work on this narrative poem in 1934 or 1937, and in 1955 stated his intention to complete it, but never did. Son Christopher has gathered the best version of the main text, and chapters, fragments, and notes from Tolkien's papers. Tolkien's choices from among Arthurian lore include Arthur’s expedition overseas into distant heathen lands, Guinevere’s flight from Camelot, the great sea-battle on Arthur’s return to Britain, a portrait of the traitor Mordred, the tormented doubts of Lancelot in his French castle, and the {unwritten} bitter ending of the love of Lancelot and Guinevere.

This 'demystified take' on the tale of King Arthur is considered a travesty by many Arthurian fans: The tale is moved to the Scottish border, near Hadrian's Wall, with a half-Roman named Artorius Castus fighting for freedom from invading Saxon armies. The common complaint is that the original myth of romance and destiny and chivalry is reduced to Sixth Century warmongering. ('Freedom' was not yet a concept in the Dark Ages, kings and peasants all struggled for mere survival back then.) Filmed in Ireland & Wales and at Pinewood Studios in U.K.; produced by Jerry Bruckheimer; directed by Antoine Fuqua; written by David Franzoni; music by Hans Zimmer; starring Clive Owen {as Arthur}, Ioan Gruffudd {as Lancelot}, Keira Knightley {as Guinevere}, Stephen Dillane {as Merlin}, Mads Mikkelsen {as Tristan}, Joel Edgerton {as Gawain}, Hugh Dancy {as Galahad}, Ray Winstone, Ray Stevenson, Stellan Skarsgård, Til Schweiger, Sean Gilder, Pat Kinevane, Ivano Marescotti, Ken Stott, Lorenzo De Angelis, Stefania Orsola Garello, Charlie Creed-Miles, John G. Finding Camlann novel by Sean Pidgeon  "Finding Camlann: A Novel" [2013] by Sean Pidgeon
The legends tell us that Camlann is where King Arthur fought and died, run through by his enemy Mordred's sword – but no one is sure where Camlann is; a dramatic archaeological find at Stonehenge and the rediscovery of an old Welsh battle poem buried among the manuscripts of the Bodleian Library open up new possibilities in Arthurian scholarship for archaeologist Donald Gladstone, and beguiling linguist Julia Llewellyn opens up other possibilities as well.
