The cutthroat competition for the world champion at playing Donkey Kong lands the winner in the Guinness Book of World Records. In the early 1980s, legendary Billy Mitchell
set a Donkey Kong record that stood for almost 25 years. Title-holder Mitchell and challenger Steve Wiebe were filmed in 2006, as their scores toggled back and forth.
Steve Wiebe regained the title on 20 September 2010 with 1,064,500 points. Hank Chien achieved the world record with 1,068,000 points in January 2011.
In late 2017, it was discovered that all of Billy Mitchell's Donkey Kong records of over one million points were fraudulent: Mitchell's video footage was made using the MAME
emulator, which allows players to use save states; his video game world records were expunged. On 12 September 2019, Mitchell dumped a 156-page 'evidence package'
in an attempt to prove his innocence, which was accompanied by a threat of legal action against Guinness World Records and the Twin Galaxies scoreboard
if they don't retract 'defamatory statements' against him and reinstate his expunged video game high score world records.
Right now the record stands at 1,272,700 Points, accomplished by John McCurdy on 17 March 2021.
