Chrysler entry at Wikipedia |
  | "Chrysler's Turbine Car: The Rise and Fall of Detroit's Coolest Creation" [2010] by Steve Lehto, Foreword by Jay Leno In 1964, Chrysler built a fleet of turbine cars – automobiles with jet engines – and loaned them out to members of the public. The exercise was a raging success: the engines would run on any flammable liquid and contained one-fifth the number of moving parts, requiring much less maintenance; the cars had no radiators or fan belts and never needed oil changes. Yet Chrysler crushed & burned most of the cars two years later. Questions about how and why the program & technologies were killed have still not been satisfactorily answered.
