2020: That’s What I Like

          Schoolteacher Caleb Bradham [1867-1934] opened a drugstore in Downtown New Bern, Craven County, South Carolina; in 1893, he invented a soda fountain drink intended to aid digestion; in 1893 he changed the name to Pepsi-Cola. He incorporated the Pepsi-Cola Company in North Carolina in December 1902; the first Pepsi-Cola trademark was approved in June 1903; in 1905, he began selling Pepsi-Cola in 6-ounce bottles. By 1923, Pepsi-Cola was bottled by franchisees in 24 states; but the volatile post-war price of sugar jumped by a factor of ten, forcing Pepsi-Cola to file bankruptcy; the company was sold to the Craven Holding Company for $30,000. {At the time of the bankruptcy, Bradham was 56 years old and he returned to running the drugstore; he died in 1934 at age 67.}

          The assets of Pepsi-Cola landed under ownership of Loft's Candies, then the largest seller of candy in America, intended as a replacement for Coca-Cola at the sode fountains in Loft's stores; Loft's chemists reformulated the Pepsi-Cola syrup. In 1934, Pepsi-Cola began selling their product in 12-ounce bottles for the standard 5¢ price, a major factor in rapid increases in sales {Coca-Cola was sold in 6½-ounce bottles for 5¢}. In 1934, shareholders of Loft's Candies sued Charles Guth for the 91% stake that he owned in Pepsi-Cola: Guth was president of both Pepsi-Cola and Loft Candies and the shareholders accused him of conflict of interest; the case was decided in favor of Loft's shareholders by the Delaware Supreme Court in April 1939. Loft absorbed Pepsi-Cola in 1941, changed their name to Pepsi Cola Company, and then sold off the assets of failing Loft's Candies. In 1965, Pepsi Cola merged with Frito-Lay to form PepsiCo, Inc.; in 1970, company headquarters were relocated to Purchase, Westchester County, New York; in 1986, PepsiCo was reincorporated in the state of North Carolina.
          A string of divestitures in the 1970s removed most of the non-snack & beverage brands (restaurant chains, Wilson Sporting Goods, North American Van Lines), and then began large-scale acquisitions: Tropicana orange juice in 1998, Quaker Oats Company in 2001 (which included Gatorade). In March 2020, PepsiCo announced purchase of Rockstar Energy drinks for $3.85 billion.

          PepsiCo is the largest food & beverage business by net revenue in North America, and the second largest food & beverage business in the world, behind Nestlé.
