"A woman's chastity consists, like an onion, of a series of coats."

"Accuracy is the twin brother of honesty; inaccuracy, of dishonesty."

"Easy reading is damn hard writing."

"Happiness is a butterfly, which when pursued, is always just beyond your grasp,
but which, if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you."

In 1842 Hawthorne, the author of Twice-Told Tales, escorts his beloved new wife, Sophia, to their first home, the Old Manse. In love with Concord and enriched by friendships with Thoreau and Emerson, this becomes an idyllic time for him. But ultimately, unable to make enough money from his writing, he returns ingloriously to his mother's home in Salem. In 1852, Hawthorne returns to Concord, now the renowned novelist of both The Scarlet Letter (1850) and The House of the Seven Gables (1851). Eager to begin writing at the scene of his earlier happiness, he instead completes a biography of his college friend, Franklin Pierce, who is running for president. When Pierce wins, Hawthorne is appointed to the lucrative post of consul in Liverpool. Coming home in 1860, he finds America on the verge of civil war. Emerson welcomes Hawthorne with a gala strawberry party. Concord is now a hive of abolitionists, but Hawthorne withdraws due to his ambiguous views on the war and his deteriorating health.

"The Celestial Railroad" [1843 story]
Celestial Railroad 1843 short story by Nathaniel Hawthorne   story only Kindle Edition from Amazon Digital Services [2008] for 99¢ {sic}
A parody of American religion circa 1840 as well as a parody of John Bunyan's magnum opus "Pilgrim's Progress" [1678]. Where pilgrims to the Celestial City once carried their sins as burdens to somehow get rid of, 'modern' Christianity provides a railroad so that pilgrims may ride in comfort, their sins safely stowed away. Hawthorne's point (and the joke) is that though the way ('modern' Christianity) seems so easy and makes so much progress, in the end, the modern pilgrim is appalled to learn that it never does take the rider to Celestial City!

Hawthorne's Fuller Mystery book by Thomas R. Mitchell  "Hawthorne's Fuller Mystery" [1998] by Thomas R. Mitchell
At the time of her death, Margaret Fuller [1810-50] was considered an important figure in the Transcendentalist movement, especially in the realm of feminism. Julian Hawthorne performed rather a 'hatchet job' on Margaret in several books about his father (so as to whitewash Nath-aniel). This book examines the record within Nathaniel's writings, and restores Margaret as a major influence on Hawthorne and on the Transcendental circle in Massachussets.

Transcendentalism
Transcendentalism entry at Wikipedia
"Transcendentalism was the New England movement of the 1830s and 1840s that brought together Romanticism in
literature and social reform in politics. Its partisans argued for the rights of women, the abolition of slavery, and, in some
cases, the socialization of labor and equal distribution of profits. They were America’s first avant-garde."
