In May 2010, Motion Picture Corporation of America bought the films rights to a Vanity Fair article co-written by Thompson and the magazine’s contributing editor Mark Seal about 21-year-old Lisl Auman who was charged with murder & convicted even though the crime occurred while she was in the back of a patrol car, already in police custody. Thompson's unrelenting pursuit of the case, including the June 2004 magazine article, helped overturn Auman’s sentence in 2005.
