"I have lived a thousand lives and I have loved a thousand loves. I have walked on distant worlds and seen the end of time. Because I read."

"Oft-times a very small man can cast a very large shadow."

"I believe in steel swords, gold coins, and man's wits ... And I believe [that] there once were dragons. I've seen their skulls, after all."

— George R.R. Martin

Brief  Profile
George Raymond Martin was born on 20 September 1948 in Bayonne, New Jersey, USA; he added the confirmation name Richard at age 13; he participated in comic books fandom during the 1960s; after graduating college in 1971, he registered as a conscientuious objector during the VietNam War draft and served two years as a VISTA volunteer in Chicago. He taught at Clarke College in Dubuque, Iowa until moving to Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1979.

George Martin wrote short stories beginning in the 1970s; many were standard sci-fi and were nominated for or won Hugos and other awards. His excellent vampire novel "Fevre Dream" was published in 1983, followed with the horror novel "The Armageddon Rag" [1984]. He then wrote and produced television shows in Hollywood. After a string of unfulfilling and-or unproduced TV & movie projects, he returned to writing novels in 1991. His epic fantasy series "A Song of Ice and Fire" was inspired by the Wars of The Roses (1455‑87) and by
Sir Walter Scott's "Ivanhoe" [1820] and intended to comprise seven volumes.

"A Game of Thrones" was published in 1996. "A Feast For Crows" [11/2005], the fourth novel in the series, became a New York Times #1 Bestseller and also a Wall Street Journal #1 Bestseller, plus other awards. The fifth book, "A Dance With Dragons", was published in July 2011, and quickly became an international bestseller, including achieving a #1 spot on the New York Times and many other lists, remaining on the New York Times list for 88 weeks. The remaining two novels are named "The Winds of Winter" and "A Dream of Spring". Book 6 is still unfinished (Summer 2016) and Martin has announced that he has halted work on all other projects; various parties hope that the book sees publication by year-end.

A rumor showed up in the London, U.K. Daily Mail in August 2019 suggesting that executives at the National Theatre in London were 'mulling over' the idea
of adapting George R.R. Martin’s "A Song of Ice and Fire" for the London stage; the National Theater responded with a flat denial – but isn’t that just what someone
who was planning a "Game of Thrones" production would say?
