“The trouble with the rat race is that even if you win, you're still a rat.”
— Lily Tomlin

“Capitalism is the creation of jobs and products and services.”
philosopher G.E. Nordell

“I believe totally in a Capitalist System, I only wish that someone would try it.”
architect Frank Lloyd Wright [1867-1959]

“With an evening coat and a white tie, even a stockbroker can gain a reputation for being civilized.”
Oscar Wilde [1854-1900]

The candle-lit office of old and the corporate towers and boardrooms and factories of today are ripe for satire, as well as for heavy drama. Charles Dickens wrote "A Christmas Carol" in 1843, Herman Melville wrote "Bartleby The Scrivener" in 1853, and Arthur Miller's stageplay "Death of A Salesman" was a Broadway smash in 1949.
Books on the subject abound, such as "Leadership Secrets of Attila The Hun" [1989 bestseller].
The movie industry has not avoided this genre: classics include Charlie Chaplin's "Modern Times" [1936], "The Man In The Gray Flannel Suit" [1956], and "Putney Swope" [1969], with many office-based TV sitcoms over the years as well as the "Office Space" franchise [1991 TV & 1999 movie], "The Office" TV series [2001-2013], and the "Mad Men" hit TV series [2007‑2012].
Included here are dozens more comedies & dramas that you may have missed.

"Startup.Com" docufilm [indep May 2001]
Startup.Com docufilm by Chris Hegedus & Jehane Noujaim  Filmmakerss Chris Hegedus (The War Room) and Jehane Noujaim couldn't have imagined the drama that awaited when they began documenting the creation of the pioneering e-commerce site govWorks.com. For over a year they followed the company, the brainchild of childhood-friends-turned-business-partners software geek and doting single dad Tom Herman, and ambitious young business-school-grad-turned-company-CEO Kaleil Isaza Tuzman. During the rise of the Internet investment frenzy and the subsequent crash of the dot-economy, the cameras remain keyed into the human dynamic: the lifestyle compromises, the personal sacrifices, and the clash of philo-sophies and personalities that ultimately tear boyhood buddies Tom and Kaleil apart . . . almost. Docufilm's portrait of the cutthroat nature of American business culture and the choices one makes (or doesn't) to succeed poses the one question most documentaries ignore: Is it worth it?
