Famous historical epidemics include:

several plagues in the 'Moses in Egypt' legend;

the Plague of Athens [429-426 BCE] was the first recorded by a witness, the statesman Thucydides;

the Plague of Justinian in 6th Century AD;

the Black Death/Plague (circa 1350 AD);

the Great Plague of London (circa 1665);

the Columbian Exchange, 1492-1550;

the American Yellow Fever Epidemic of 1793;

the Spanish influenza pandemic of 1918;

and the several influenza epidemics of the XXth and XXIst Century.

Long-standing diseases with occasional outbreaks include: cholera, dengue fever, diphtheria, malaria, measles, meningitis, polio, small pox, syphilis, tuberculosis, typhus, yellow fever, and the more-recent HIV/AIDS (ongoing since 1982).

Fiction about epidemics go back at least to 1826; silent films about epidemics go back at least to 1918. Production of movies about the current Wuhan coronavirus pandemic are delayed because so many countries are still in lock-down mode. {NOTE: The proprietor of this online bookstore avoids the silliness of the vampire and zombie genres, but here has reluctantly included several movies that feature some viral cause of their existence.}
