"I just decided to make a movie. I had no training, no film school, but I had been to a lot of movies."
— Michael Moore
Michael Moore leapt into public awareness with "Roger & Me", his 1989 documentary film blasting the chairman of General Motors for destroying the economy of Flint, Michigan (Moore's home town).
His 2002 film "Bowling For Columbine" won an Oscar for Best Documentary feature.
The very controversial documentary film "Fahrenheit 9/11" won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2004, and then got even more free publicity when Disney Studios told subsidiary Miramax Films not to distribute the movie, for fear of interference in Bush's re-election. A deal was made and Miramax bought the film outright, then signed with independents Lionsgate & I.F.C. for distribution.
After the record-setting opening of "Fahrenheit 9/11" in June 2004, Moore made the cover of Time Magazine -- see two online articles from that July 12th issue: "The World According To Michael" by Richard Corliss & others, and "The Moore Method" sidebar. And he also was listed as one of the Time Magazine 100 (April 2005).
Not one to avoid the spotlight, Moore revealed in early 2007 that the I.R.S. was going to audit his income tax records because of his trip to Cuba to film parts of "Sicko", nicely timed for the opening of that film.
Moore's sequel project called "Fahrenheit 9/11½" seems to be abandoned.
Moore's next project is "a look at the global financial crisis and the U.S. economy during the transition between the incoming Obama Administration and the outgoing Bush Administration".

  | Gadfly filmmaker Michael Moore toured the U.S. to increase voter registration among post-high school youth ('slackers') for the important 2004 Presidential election, and he took his camera crew with him.
