“When you have eliminated all which is impossible, then whatever remains,
however improbable, must be the truth.”

Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on 22 May 1859. He received a degree in medicine in 1881 at Edinburgh University, and became an eye specialist in Southsea. The practice was not very successful, so he began writing in hope of augmenting his income. His first story, "A Study In Scarlet", starred detective Sherlock Holmes, who was modeled in part after Doyle's mentor Dr. Joseph Bell of the Edinburgh Infirmary. After several rejections, the story was sold to a British publisher for £25, and 59 more Sherlock Holmes adventures followed.

Doyle was knighted in 1902 for his defense of the British cause in the Boer War. After the deaths of a series of family members around the end of World War I, Doyle became an ardent Spiritualist and wrote several books on the subject. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle died at age 71 of a heart attack at home in Sussex on 7 July 1930.

“The love of books is among the choicest gifts from the gods.”

“I am the most incurably lazy devil that ever stood in shoe leather.”

“Some people's affability is more deadly than the violence of coarser souls.”

The Narrative of John Smith, Arthur Conan Doyle's first novel  "The Narrative of John Smith" [2011]
Introduction by Jon Lellenberg; Doyle's long-unpublished first novel-length work (after many short stories); a series of ruminations providing an exceptional window into the mind of the creator of Sherlock Holmes. John Smith, a fifty-year-old man confined to his room by an attack of gout, opines with bravado on a range of subjects – including literature, science, religion, war, and education – with no detectable insecurity or diffidence.

Ghost of the Mary Celeste novel by Valerie Martin  "The Ghost of The Mary Celeste: A Novel" [2014] by Valerie Martin
The American merchant vessel Mary Celeste was discovered adrift off the coast of Spain in 1872; her cargo was intact and there was no sign of struggle, but the crew was gone – they were never found. While on a voyage to Africa, a rather hard-up and unproven young writer named Arthur Conan Doyle hears of the tale and decides to write an outlandish short story about what took place, which causes quite a sensation back in the United States.
