About  Author  Maurice  Leblanc  [1864-1941]

Maurice Marie Émile Leblanc was born in December 1864 in Rouen, Normandy, France; after dropping out of law school, he settled in Paris and began to write fiction; his short crime stories and longer novels were critically admired but had little commercial success.

The first Arsène Lupin story was serialized in the magazine Je Sais Tout (I Know Everything) in July 1905; the roguish and glamorous Lupin was a surprise success and Leblanc's fame and fortune followed; in total, Leblanc wrote 24 Lupin novels or collections of short stories. Just as Arthur Conan Doyle was stuck writing more Sherlock Holmes tales, Leblanc was stuck writing more Arsène Lupin adventures: both authors resented the fact that their other works had little success.

Leblanc also wrote two notable science fiction novels: "Les Trois Yeux" [1919] and "Le Formidable Evènement" [1920], several Arsène Lupin stageplays, and other fiction.

Leblanc was awarded the Légion d'Honneur for his services to literature.
He died in 1941 at age 76 in Perpignan on the southern Mediterranean coast of France.
